How is EPS calculated?

The formula for EPS is:

EPS = (Net Income - Preferred Dividends) / End of period Shares Outstanding

EPS = (Net Profit - Preferred dividend) / Weighted Average Shares Outstanding

To calculate EPS, the first formula uses the total outstanding shares. Analysts use the second formula of the outstanding weighted average shares because the number of outstanding shares in the market can vary depending on the course of time.
